This book was in fact my second written manuscript, after A MOMENT
OF SILENCE, but took ten years to get into print. As an afficionado
of the “alternative history” genre of science-fiction,
I wondered how one could make it more grounded in actual politics.
The result was that the level of research threatened to overwhelm the
book, and I could never quite solve the familiar S-F problem of the
background swamping the characters. Oddly enough, the book seems to
have established some kind of presence in the genre, and is still Out
There, in its US edition. Even odder, in 2002 it was taken on by an
Italian publisher for translation. Watch the skies…
